In Settlers & Seditionist Michael Flynn tells the story of the extraordinary voyage of the ship Surprize, setting it against the turbulent background of the 1793 crackdown on dissent in Britain aimed at counteracting the influence on American and French Revolutions which had encouraged discussion of republicanism and constitutional change.
The first political convicts sent to New South Wales sailed on the Surprize were the Scottish Martyrs - Muir, Palmer, Skirving and Margorot.
Included in this 200th anniversary commemorative edition are biographies of free settlers and NSW Corps soldiers on the ship and of the convicts (many of them women), giving fascinating details of their crime, their appearance, and their voices as heard at their trials. (book flap)
