Sense of Place is a topographic essay on the environs of Perth, Western Australia. It is in three parts - the land, the plants and human impact. The landforms, climate, drainage, geology and flora are discussed in detail to construct a picture of the region before European settlement. Land use by Indigenous and the increasing impact of European settlement on major environmental resources are explored.
Includes bibliography and index. Please note that the ISBN for this book is also the ISBN for V G Fall's Sea and the Forest: History of the Port of Rockingham, Western Australia. Both published by UWA Press in 1972.
A remarkable man, George Seddon was one of the first to use the phrase "sense of place" in an Australian context. He rethought our relationship with the environment and broke new ground in urban planning, landscape architecture and environmental conservation.
Both the first edition and the 2004 facsimile are tough to find. It's not a book that you sell if you're lucky enough to have one. As an ex-government librarian, I remember well how hard it was to track down copies for sale. I also remember how much we were prepared to pay. The price I am offering for this copy is very reasonable.
