This book seeks to be the first reliable and connected account of the early years of the Lake Macquarie region.
The book is presented in two parts. The first opens with the unusual story of the lake's discovery in 1800 and records the experiences of the early European explorers, surveyors, and pioneer settlers.
The second part traces the commercial development of Lake Macquarie following the goldrush period. Coal and timber were the key trade items, and the lake was vital in transporting these commodities.
The book concludes with the building of the northern railway just before 1890. (book flap)
