Elizabeth and Derek Tribe came to live in Australia in 1956 and liked it here.
After returning to the UK in 1961, many friends quizzed them about life in Australia. The interest shown by so many friends was matched by a general ignorance of the place and its people.
Was the place really full of kangaroos and sheep? Was life really so lacking culture? Were the houses really just wooden bungalows lacking internal sanitation? Was it fair to the children to deprive them of an English schooling?
They realised that information supplied by Australia House was too general for professionals. Even those who were anxious to come to Australia knew little about the country. So the authors put together a series of letters by 'Sheila and Jack', shedding light on Australia to help migrants prepare for their future, and the result is Postmark Australia.
