Japanese troops invaded Malaya in December 1941.
In February 1942, 65 Australian army nurses escaped Singapore on the SS Vyner Brooke. Two days later, the ship sank by Japanese aircraft. A group of survivors, including 22 nurses, made it ashore to Radji Beach on Banka Island near Sumatra.
The Japanese soldiers who subsequently found the survivors would not accept their surrender. The Australian nurses were ordered into the water and died in a hail of bullets.
Only Vivian Bullwinkel survived, pretending to be dead. Wounded, Bullwinkel endured 13 days in the jungle before another Japanese patrol picked her up. Bullwinkel waited with the other surviving nurses from the Vyner Brooker.
They went on to endure three and a half years in internment camps. Only 24 of the original 65 returned to Australia.
