The 'tea and sugar' supply train that carries the necessities and minor luxuries to the tiny townships along the Trans-Australian Railway, is part of folklore. Basil Fuller decided to take the 'tea and sugar' to find out for himself more about the railway.
The project developed into an exploration of the two routes linking eastern and western Australia across the vast arid Nullarbor Plain: the railway and the Eyre Highway.
Basil Fuller blends his observations of the road and rail links with the history of the Nullabor, as told to him by men who remember the camel trains. With wry humour and a picturesque turn of phrase, he writes of people who have learnt to survive on the homesteads and railway sidings of Australia outposts.
The 'tea and sugar train' operated until 1996.
