Book Description

Secondhand. Good condition. Wear to book corners and edges. No cover. Reprinted from the Papers and Proceedings of the Royal Society of Tasmania.

In the year 1832, James Backhouse and George Washington Walker, two Quaker missionaries, arrived at Hobart from England. The primary objectives of their visit were to investigate the condition of the prisoner population and the functioning of the penal system. Another was an enquiry into the treatment of the Aboriginal inhabitants.

They spent six years in Tasmania, New South Wales, travelling as far north as Brisbane. They visited Port Phillip, South Australia and Western Australia before departing Australia.

Some books contain terms that reflect the authors' views or those of the period in which the item was written or created but are not considered appropriate today. These views are not the views of The Book Merchant. These books are offensive to many and should be seen in their historical context.
