This story in diary form is, for the most part, the story of HMS Clacton and its officers and ratings.
HMS Clacton was a Royal Navy Bangor class fleet minesweeper, commissioned in 1942. Phillip Herlihy joined the Clacton as a Sub Lieutenant for her commissioning having completed training in advanced navigation and anti-submarine warfare. He was appointed Lieutenant in July 1942 and stayed until November 1942.
Later he returned to the Australian navy to serve on the HMAS Burdekin as a navigating officer until his discharge in February 1946. The Burdekin, a river class frigate engaged in convoy escort duties in company with American destroyer escort vessels on runs between New Guinea and the Philippines. It took part in the landing at Tarakan in Borneo and took part in the surrender of all Japanese forces in North East Borneo. (back cover)
