Story of Sissy, Veronica Hewison, born in Perth in 1952 and her experiences and life around Geraldton, Yalgoo, Newman and Meekatharra in the mid-west of Western Australia.
Written by her brother, the book is dedicated to his Sissy's courage and resilience even as a young girl, who lost her parents at just thirteen years of age in tragic circumstances. In every fearful and terrifying situation throughout her life, Sissy fought her fear and pushed through, raising a family and serving her community.
"Funny little kid grew up as a freckly, little, reserved kid. Always kept out of the way, almost hiding. I remember her always coming to mum for protection, only to be disappointed time and time again. I can also remember the violence in the family and her carefully trying to hide from it. Yeah, poor little kid, shit scared most of the time. So the story begins with Veronica. She's a beautiful little kid. One of my favourite memories with her was singing the Ballad of Tom Dooley. We used to sing it to the footballers and all the guys that Dad used to bring home from Swan Districts footy club. We'd have big booze ups, and it was fun. She could sing the house down".
"Everybody called Veronica Sissy. I think I started it because I was always told that she was my little sissy, and so I used to call her sissy, and then everybody did. But she was a beautiful little kid, and we lived in a time when things were different from what they are today..."
