George Ernest Morrison (1862-1920) was an Australian who lived in the tradition of the great 19th century Western explorers and adventurers.
As Peking correspondent for The Times from 1897 to 1912, and then as a political advisor to Sun Yat-sen, he was regarded as a world authority on China, observing or taking part in some of China's most crucial historical events including the Boxer Uprising and the fall of the Qing Dynasty.
A compulsive and tireless reporter, Morrison kept diaries for most of his life. Cyril Pearl's penetrating biography, based largely on these diaries, illuminates both a fascinating era and the character of one of its most remarkable men. (book flap)
