This is the first edition of Matthew Flinders' letters to be published. One hundred and ten, mainly private , letters are reproduced, covering the period of his life for which letters are extant, from 1795, when he was twenty, to his death in 1814.

Flinders was a prolific letter writer and all the letters included have been transcribed in their entirety. The majority of letters are held at the Mitchell Library.
