When British troops arrived at Belsen concentration camp in German, April 1945, they found 400,000 desperately ill men, women and children and 10, 000 unburied bodies. Typhus was raging and water and food had been withheld for over a week.
Chief Nurse Muriel Know Doherty arrived soon after the British and was tasked with creating a hospital, scouring suppliers and saving as many camp interns as possible. In her letters to her mother and friends in Australia, Doherty describes her experiences at Belsen in moving detail.
It is a compassionate tale of the tragedy of World War II.
