The book begins with the story of Harold William Williams (Bill), his father, Private Harold Williams. His father recollects fighting on the French battlefields in WWII. It is a story of trenches with the heroism and glory usually associated with war stories.

Like his father, Bill finds himself in the Australian forces as an RAAF wireless operator in WWII. Bill tells of being on the last plane out of Ambon, before the Japanese invasion.

In this book, Bill also writes about his post-war involvement in the NSW and WA coal mining industry.
