Sir Thomas Cockburn-Campbell was born in 1918, the oldest son of the 5th Baronet of Gartsford. The family came to Western Australia in 1858 when Thomas' great-grandfather came to Albany as Superintendent of Police.
Thomas spent his early years at Waterloo Station in the Northern Territory, where his father was manager. Following his mother's death when he was seven, he was passed through the hands of a succession of relatives, finally breaking free and heading north at the age of seventeen.
His account of his experiences in the 1930s and 1940s as station hand, horse trapper and breaker, drover and battling station owner is unique in its detail. (book flap)
