Job Francis Haddleton describes in detail the management of the farm at Coompatine, established by his father, Thomas Gibson Haddleton, a former convict. Job's humorous anecdotes offer readers a glimpse into the hardships and joys of family farming life, as well as the lives of other Katanning pioneers.
Thomas had arrived as a 16-year-old from England in 1846. He was a Parkhurst Boy, having already spent three years in Parkhurst Prison on the Isle of Wight. He continued to serve his sentence as a Parkhurst Apprentice in York before settling in the Katanning area. (Preface)
