Book Description

Secondhand. Good condition. Wear to book corners and edges. Previous owner has signed inside page.

An isolated religious community, the Kalumburu Benedictine Mission, dedicated to the conversion and education of “primitive people”, suddenly finds itself thrust into the front line of a modern war.

Despite the stresses and strains of enemy bombing and the arrival of air force personnel, the monks kept a meticulous daily diary, even recording chicken hatching.

This edited version gives a finely etched picture of life at Kalumburu in the 1940s under the difficult conditions that war imposed on the community and gives an interesting hint of the underlying tensions that prevailed even then between the community and the official attitude towards the Aboriginals. Here in Australia's remotest North-West is all the conflict of the generations in microcosm. (back cover)
