The book is the second volume of two published as Ion Idriess's Greatest Stories (1986) and includes three of his works.

This book begins with a biography of Ion Llewellyn (Jack) Idriess, including a chronology of significant events in his life.

1. The Silver City was initially published in 1956 and is a history of Broken Hill.
2. Lightning Ridge was published in 1940 and is based on Idriess's opal prospecting days at Lightning Ridge.
3. The Desert Column was published in 1932 and is based on Idriess's dairy from his service in WWI at Gallipoli, Sinai and Palestine.
