Book Description

Secondhand. Very good condition. Minimal edgewear.

Stuart was the son of Julian Stuart, who was imprisoned for his part in the 1891 Queensland Shearers Strike. Donald left home before his 15th birthday to join others looking for work in the 1930s great depression. He travelled to Northern Australia and worked as a stockman and prospector, as well as various other bush callings.

The North West's harsh conditions strengthened him for the hardships he suffered in WWII when, as a machine gunner, he fought in the Middle East and survived 3 1/2 years as a prisoner of the Japanese, including a time on the infamous Burma Thailand Railway.

Stuart wrote 11 novels and many short pieces, calling upon his experience to evoke a particular period in Australian history.
