Kiandra in 1859-60 was the scene of one of the most hectic short-lived gold rushes in the history of Australia.
It commenced with the discovery of payable gold in Pollock's Gully in November 1859. By March-April 1860, there were more than 10,000 men on the field.
Several hundred endured winter snows, ill-prepared and mostly under canvas. But when summer came, the field did not live up to expectations, and by March 1861, a great exodus had happened with miners moving to Lambling Flat.
By 1905, mining had ceased, and no other means of livelihood had developed besides some grazing and skiing tourism. So the settlement dwindled with Kiandra a ghost town until 1949 when the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme began. (Introduction)
