The biography of John Stuart Hepburn, early pastoralists and landholder in Victoria.

Hepburn named his pastoral station Smeaton Hill after the small hamlet in Scotland, where he was born. The homestead was called Seaton House, being constructed in 1849-50. The house is still standing today and is an example of the wealth of the squattocracy of colonial pre-gold rush Victoria.

Hepburn also founded the rural town of Smeaton, near Creswick. The town of Hepburn Spring is named after him.

Includes bibliography and index. Originally published in 1967.
