Hello Mr Melody Man, these words spoken by the compere of ABC's Children's Hour opened Lindley Evan's radio session and signalled for thousands of Argonauts throughout Australia the start of another exciting journey into the world of music.
Lindley Evans pioneered this radio programme, remaining with it for 31 years. Yet it was Dame Nellie Melba's pianist, Lindley Evans, who first became widely known to the public. He was only 27 when he first met Melba and was invited to become her accompanist on a tour of England.
In the late 1920s, Evans joined the teaching staff of the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music, where he continued to teach for nearly forty years. His association with fellow teacher Frank Hutchens blossomed, and the pair was greatly acclaimed for the two piano concerts they performed for decades.
This memoir provides a history of music in Australia during the first half of the 20th century. It is a charming and humourous collection of reminiscences. (book flap)
