The book tells the fascinating story of Vida and her family. Her grandmother came from Germany as a child and settled in a town called Grovedale, near Geelong. After her grandmother got married, her grandparents moved to Murtoa in the Wimmera district of Victoria in the early 1870s.

In 1912, Vida and her sister went to live with their aunt and grandmother in Murtoa. The book explores their experiences and the history of their family and the places they lived in.
