Thomas Welby was born in Ipswich in 1858. Few in his lifetime were as familiar with Moreton Bay and its islands as Welsby. He owned a succession of boats, enjoyed fishing, and so intense was his interest in the area's history he was able to traverse the routes of Cook, Flinders and Oxley.

In the first section of this book, he recounts many shipwrecks in the Bay and, in doing so, includes many items of interest concerning places and identities.

The book's second section contains the discovery of the Brisbane River, a complete and thorough account of the European men Oxley found in 1823 at Moreton Bay and who led him to the river.

The book concludes with articles on the climbing of the Glasshouse Mountains and the Bounty mutiny. (back cover)
