David Syme was the most influential figure in Australian newspaper publishing and editing in the 19th century. The life of the man tells his story from the time of his arrival in Melbourne, 1852, until his death, February 1908 - a span of more than half a century.
Syme was at the forefront of every radical campaign for political, social and economic advancement of the colony of Victoria during that long period. He controlled many public men in his long career: made them, broke them, moulded them to his policies, and guided them in carrying them out.
He made The Age the mouthpiece of every popular movement of the time: the fight for land reform, protection to industry, a liberal system of parliamentary government, anti-sweating in factories, the creation of wages boards and reasonable working conditions.
