The history of South Australia was shaped by men of enterprise and determination, men intent on proving that the ideal colony envisaged by Edward Gibbon Wakefield was indeed a possibility.
The pioneering spirit displayed by the Chambers brothers, James (Jemmy) and John, and by their friends William Finke, Alfred Barker and John McDouall Stuart may be described as legendary. Between them, they played a substantial part in developing South Australia and the Northern Territory. They went on exploratory expeditions, took up massive pastoral leases on which they raised sheep, cattle, and fine horses, developed copper mines, owned hotels, and founded prosperous businesses.
Jemmy Chambers was the first ashore from the ship Coromandel when it arrived at Holdfast Bay in January 1837, and he was the first to recognise the need and provide the colonists with a carrying service from Glenelg to Adelaide. His bullock team and homemade cart were to become the basis for a thriving and essential transport business and livery stable. (book flap)
