Clear Across Australia is the story of the development of telecommunications in Australia. It is the history of technology and people. It is also a story of Australia's great pioneering enterprise, Telecom Australia (Telstra), and its predecessors, the Postmaster-General's Department and the colonial telegraph offices.
In the early days of European settlement, communications were by slow sailing ships. The Telegraph, first introduced in Victoria in 1854, soon put people more closely in touch with each other. The building of the great Overland Telegraph Line across the deserts of Central Australia to Darwin linked Australia by direct cable communication to the rest of the world. It was the beginning of a long telecommunications revolution. (book flap)
