From a childhood of truancy, petty theft and shoplifting, John Chow Hayes (1911-1993) rapidly became Australia's most notorious and feared mobster, ruthlessly disposing of any rivals who dared to cross his path.
Hayes worked for or associated with all the major players of the Sydney underworld - SP bookies, sly-grog specialists, vice racketeers and illegal gambling bosses. He served sentences at all the major prisons in New South Wales.
John Chow Hayes was the king of Sydney's standover men during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. Based on interviews by David Hickie with Hayes. (back cover)
