The mountain men and women of the Australian Alps are a special kind of people. They have come to grips with a challenging hostile environment and have developed as rugged and resilient individuals.
The Bogong High Plains of Victoria first became of interest to European settlers as a place to graze stock during the summertime. Then gold was discovered, and many cattlemen found employment providing services to the gold seekers and miners. Hydroelectric schemes were surveyed and became a reality. Skiing was tried, eventually opening up the mountain area to the sporting public. But through all the changes, the people of the high country remained as characters in their own right.
The authors interviewed many old timers and their descendants and researched the scant literature on early life in the High Country. (back cover)
