Valston Eldridge Hancock (1907-1998) was born in Perth on 31 May 1907 and educated at Hale School. He was selected in 1925 for training as an officer at Duntroon. Upon graduation in 1928, he sought entry to the RAAF and was selected for pilot training.
During the early years of WWII, he commanded No. 1 Bombing and Gunnery School and held senior administrative roles. He saw action in the Pacific War, flying Beaufort light bombers.
After the war, he served in several senior positions in the RAAF. He served as Chief of Air Staff from 1961 to 1965. He was knighted in 1962 and retired in 1965.
This is the flying story of one of Australia's most distinguished airmen, told with modesty and unassuming good humour. His pioneer ventures were during the RAAF earliest years. (book flap)
