The book is a history of the J & E Ledger Foundry. It was at this foundry that the cast-iron pillar boxes that were commonly seen throughout Western Australia were made. Joseph Sowden Ledger founded the business, originally a convict sentenced to ten years' penal service and transported to the Swan River Colony.
