The biography of Richard Casey (1890-1976), who enjoyed a life of extraordinary achievement in government, diplomacy and administration in the service of Australia and the United Kingdom. He was one of the last of the great Anglo-Australians.
Casey, who finished his public career as Lord Casey of Berwick and the City of Westminster, left behind a massive collection of personal papers to which Dr Hudson has been allowed access by Lord Casey's family. His records allow for a more intimate biography than has usually been possible in books about Australian leaders.
In Australian politics in the 1930s, Casey became federal treasurer. As Australia's first minister to Washington in 1940-42, he was a great success thanks to his charm and manners. He was the first Australian appointed to the post of Governor General under a non-Labour government (1965-69).
