Binningup is a modest coastal settlement in the Shire of Harvey. The area that would become the townsite was initially used as a coastal homeguard post by the local Voluntary Defence Corps during World War II.
The men who served there quickly recognised the site’s beauty and recreational possibilities. After the war, they formed the Binningup Beach Syndicate to promote the area's development as a place where their families could holiday.
After more than a decade of voluntary effort by members of the Syndicate, not the least of which was the construction of the entry road into town, the town site was formally gazetted in 1963.
Since this time, Binningup has grown into a vibrant coastal town and a popular holiday spot. (Binningup Beach Local Structure Plan, 2013)
