Birdum is an old ghost town 500 kilometres South of Darwin. It was the terminus for the now defunct North Australian Railway (the NAR), which ran from Darwin down toward the centre from 1929 to 1942. Then, during the war years, Larrimah became the terminus. The NAR rail system was closed after Cyclone Tracy in 1974, the new 21st century Asia Rail follows a different route.
Birdum was also the northern junction for the mail and overland freight coming by road or horse from South Australia and the eastern states, heading north to go on the rail for Darwin. (TROVE)
