In 1829, the New South Wales Supreme Court sentenced Jane New to death for shoplifting French silk. Jane's sentence was revoked due to a legal technicality, but Governor Ralph Darling refused to set her free. Coming to Jane's defence were several prominent citizens. The ensuing scandal almost brought the colony to a constitutional crisis and contributed to the savage public vilification of Governor Darling.
