In 1829, the New South Wales Supreme Court sentenced Jane New to death for shoplifting French silk. Jane's sentence was revoked due to legal technicality, but Governor Ralph Darling refused to set her free. Coming to Jane's defence were several prominent citizens. The ensuing scandal almost brought the colony to a constitutional crisis and contributed to the savage public vilification of Governor Darling.
