Hugh Proby (1829-1852), squire of Kanyaka, has a lonely grave in the Flinders Valley.
He was the son of an earl and took up the pastoral lease of Kanyaka in 1851. Many people must have wondered what he was like and why he chose to come to this semi-arid place. The author has published unedited letters from Hugh Proby to his family in 1851-52, and has researched and commented on points of historical interest and the social and economic climate at the time.
His letters paint a picture of an intelligent, well-educated, adventurous, fortune-seeking and caring young man from a devoted family.
