When John and Mary Higham, with two small children, sailed bravely away from England in 1853, Western Australia was just an infant colony. Their new life was not easy. John started a bakery in Fremantle, but died five years later, leaving Mary with four young children.
This story is as much an account of Fremantle through the latter half of the 19th century, of its growth from a tiny village to a major port, of the efforts of the council, and of friends and associates - the Batemans, the Pearses, the Saws and the Humbles. But above all this book is a tribute to a remarkable woman raising and holding together a family and business, supporting Fremantle institutions. (back cover)
