The physical taming of Australia was swift and, for the most part successful - large cities sprang up, democratic experiments were made, and in a series of rushes and marches the grasslands were settled with sheep and cattle, and the goldfields were found, and the first wheatlands were ploughed.
Emotionally, however, its conquest was slow. The cultural baggage brought by new settlers impeded their appreciation of the virtues of their new homeland.
Australia's story, begun in Triumph of the Nomads and The Tyranny of Distance is continued here in A Land Half Won. (back cover)
