Melbourne's east began life as a place of rural respite for well-to-do Melbournites and gentlemen farmers. Camberwell was a country escape, whilst Blackburn was known for fresh air and for creating the best brickworks in Melbourne. To think of Balwyn was to think of homemade wines and farming plots, and to Doncaster was a tourist destination known for its orchards and hills.
A past barely recognisable in terms of open spaces, but a history easily mirrored by the grand homes, leafy streets and personality of today's east. (back cover)
