Toy travelled, at a time when such a journey was deemed impossible for a solo woman, in a 1950 80-inch Series I Land Rover demonstration model that she named Polyanna. She faced great difficulties and often met danger, but she never lost her sense of humour.

Toy established herself as a pioneer of modern overland exploration driving from Tangier, through the deserts of North Africa, across the Middle East, and finally into Baghdad, Iraq .
