Book Description
Secondhand. Near fine condition.
Compiled by students of the Corrigin District High School, this book was written to rectify the fact that the direct memory of local war stories was fading and to raise awareness of Corrigin's heritage amongst students and the community alike.
In WWI, Corrigin district was represented at Gallipoli, Palestine, Egypt and Syria, Australia's first battle, a naval battle in which the German Emden was sunk by a convoy containing a Corrigin soldier on his way to Egypt. Corrigin soldiers fought on the Western Front with British and New Zealand allies.
Corrigin representatives were on most fronts during WWII, including Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Pacific. Corrigin pilots flew over Germany in Lancasters, including the famous G for George.
On the home front, the Hewett/Pitman and Park families' contribution was considerable and remarkable. Italian prisoners of war provided not only labour but a multicultural influence that added diversity to Corrigin's way of life. (Introduction)
