Book Description
Secondhand. Very good condition. Minor wear to book corners and edges.
It is 1939, and life is very basic, with no power or conveniences. A son is born, and their happiness is complete. But the world that baby Nev is born into is changing. World War II is raging in Europe, and Australia is in danger when Japan enters the war.
Ted is drafted into the Australian Army. Ted wants Lil and Nev to return to her family in the goldfields, but Lil insists on remaining on the farm in Narrogin. Lil continues running the farm. First, her sister comes to stay with her, freeing Lil to do the outside work, but she has to return home to educate her daughter.
Lil learns about cropping, shearing and improving her flock of sheep. Problems arise when Nev gets sick, a worker becomes over-friendly, and she has a fire that destroys a lot of her paddocks and sheep. She then buys another farm and is in debt and risks losing everything.
Lil is now a successful, confident woman, and when Ted returns home at the war's end, he is a broken, injured man. They find it hard to return to a loving relationship, for a son to accept him, and to fight the demons of war memories. (Trove)
