Gertrude Ruston is the character beloved by many Australians - a genuine battler and a true pioneer.
Born in England, she and her husband migrated to Western Australia to start a new life as farmers in the Narrikup area. After 17 years of heart-breaking toil, illness and the Great Depression forced them back into the city. Here they reestablished themselves against the odds and eventually, Gertrude was able to return to her first love, social welfare.
Working closely with Bessie Rischbieth, Gertrude became the founder of The Soroptimist Club of Perth, The Children's Holiday Association of Perth and State, The Citizen's Advice Bureau, the Perth Emergency Housekeeper Service, the Slow Learning Children's Group, Beehive Industries of WA, and the Council of Social Services, serving as president director or secretary.
Her service to the community was recognised with many awards including the MBE, Queen's Jubilee Medal and life membership in all the organisations she founded.
Her autobiography encompasses a virtual history of social welfare in Western Australia. (back cover)
