Sir Joseph Banks was one of the most significant figures of the 19th Century. A wealthy landowner, who became a skilled botanist and patron of science. For forty-two years Banks was president of the Royal Society.

As a young man, he sailed in a fisheries protection vessel to Newfoundland and Labrador to make the first comprehensive collection of flora and fauna from that harsh part of the world.

Two years later, he joined Captain James Cook on the Endeavour, taking with him a party of artists and naturalists. While they were in Australia, they made the first major study of Australian flora.
