In 1845 Captian Charles Sturt nearly perished in the far western corner of Queensland. This arid country is transformed by flood waters coming down the channels of the Mulligan, the Georgina and Diamantina Rivers and Eyre Creek. The pastoral settlement of the 1870s brought sheep and cattle to establish the grazing industry for which the area is famous.
In 2003, The Diamantina Shire Council celebrated a hundred years of providing services to the community. The second-largest shire in Queensland stretches from the historic town of Birdsville in the south past Betoota in the east to Bedourie in the north. (back cover)
