William Mitchell and his family arrived at the Swan River Colony on the Shepherd in August 1838. He was the first ordained priest to hold religious services in the Swan Valley area of the colony. He worked in the Swan Parish for twenty years before taking up a position at the Perth Prison on Beaufort St.
