Edward Ryan (1786-1871) was born in County Tipperary, Ireland to John and Anastasia Hennessy Ryan. In 1810 he married Ellen Nagle and they were the parents of three children. In 1815 he was arrested for rebellion and deported to Australia where he was in servitude until about 1825.
Ryan settled in New South Wales in the Lachlan district and became a farmer and a large landholder. He also built a large inn which came to be known as Galong Castle. Both he and his son became prominent in society and government. Galong Castle was later expanded and turned into a monastery. (Google Books)
