Isabella Maxwell married Dr John Ferguson in 1839. Ferguson bought shares in the Western Australian Company and in 1842, they and their children sailed on the Trusty to Western Australia.

On arrival at Australind, Isabella was so disappointed with the place that she sat on their cases and cried (P Barnes. Early Bunbury: People and Places, 2019.)

This book included letters written between 1842 and 1910 by Isabella and her family to Scottish relatives. The letters are annotated and placed within their historical context by the author.
