In 1939, the Simpson Desert remained largely uncharted. That year, businessman Alfred Allen Simpson financed the expedition led by Adelaide geologist Dr Cecil Thomas Madigan, which was to make the first modern crossing of the desolate terrain, which now bears Simpson's name.
Crossing the Dead Heart was originally published in 1946. It is a classic narrative of modern exploration, a story of adventure, enterprise and patient scientific exploration of Central Australia. The book is illustrated by photographs taken on the expedition of what is now known as the Simpson Desert.
